Turnover jumped sharply to Rs 1.45 lakh crore in the F&O segment on Thursday. The Nifty future, which was volatile in today’s trade, closed firm at 5257.55. The Nifty May futures closed at 5259.9. Both the futures ended in dismiss with note value to the spot close of 5269.35. This indicates that unwinding of long position and creation of short position. The rollover was 13 per cent, lower than the previous occasion. The discount indicates rollover of short position.
Among the options, 5200 put and 5300 call shed open interest. This signals that Nifty could move in this range. Volatility Index, which measures immediate expected volatility, also climbed. This indicates that Nifty could see volatile sessions in the coming days.
Tata Motor was the most active. SBI futures, which jumped about 4.91 per cent, shed 4.91 per cent or 1.49 lakh shares in open interest but closed with discount at 2211.7 against the spot close of 2215.
However, UCO Bank April futures, which jumped 3.9 per cent, added 25.45 lakh shares or 23.86 per cent in open position. It closed at 63.7.
Similarly, Chambal Fertilizers & Chemicals futures added 8.5 lakh shares or 9.7 per cent in open position, signalling fresh long accumulation. It closed at 64.6 with respect to the spot close of 64.4.
However, Bank of India futures added fresh short position. It closed at 372.5 against the spot price close of 378.5. It added close to six per cent in open interest.
Among the majors, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank and Bharti Airtel witnessed heavy unwinding of long position.
However, HDIL and Sun Pharma witnessed accumulation of short position.
GTL Infra, which tumbled about 2.29 per cent, witnessed unwinding of long position. It shed 1.08 crore shares or 17.41 per cent and closed at 42.8 with respect to the spot close of 42.65.
FII activity
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers to the tune of Rs 857.87 crore in the F&O segment on Thursday.
